NIILARTEY DE OSU

Artist-Philosopher | Founder of the Neoillusion Initiative

ARTIST STATEMENT

The artist does not create.

The artist reveals.

NiiLartey De Osu's practice spans four decades and resists every conventional category. Painter, fashion designer, sculptor, calligrapher, photographer, filmmaker, composer, philosopher, performance artist, poet and writer, the work unifies under a single cosmological vision: Neoillusion, the recognition that reality is consciousness revealing itself through form. His is not a body of work in the ordinary sense. It is a living cosmology, a complete philosophical and aesthetic system articulated across more than 100,000 individual works and counting.

BIOGRAPHY

NiiLartey De Osu is the founder of the Neoillusion Initiative and the originating artist-philosopher behind the Neoillusionist-Akbarian tradition, a contemporary synthesis of phenomenology, Sufi mystical philosophy (drawing especially on Ibn Arabi), and visual practice that positions the creative act as spiritual and epistemological revelation. Since the early 1990s, NiiLartey has worked in sustained meditation on a single question: what is the nature of the Real, and how does the artist's hand communicate this essence and bring it into visibility?

His answer has unfolded across an extraordinary range of media including painting, sculpture, calligraphy, charcoal painting, photography, digital art, film, music, fashion design (Neodandi), performance, choreography, and academic publication, each medium articulating a different facet of the same underlying cosmology.

Central to his vision is the figure of the Neoharlequin, the singular embodiment who straddles the worlds of what is passing and what is transpiring, existing in the third realm of pure spirit. The Neoharlequin sees reality for what it is: emptiness embodying form, form embodying emptiness. This is not nihilism but revelation, the recognition that the artist's role is to make sacred architecture visible.

Based in New York, NiiLartey continues to expand the Neoillusionist corpus through ongoing works that include Facing the New York Times: 21st Century Icons (calligraphic icons inscribed on the daily paper since 2015), Democracy Unravelling (a prophetic performance series with Master RedSquare begun July 4, 2019), and the Music Lithographs, a body of works at the intersection of sonic composition and visual edition that establishes an entirely new category in contemporary collecting.

PHILOSOPHY & PRACTICE

"The Neoharlequin sees reality for what it truly is: emptiness embodying form, form embodying emptiness, in other words, the illusion."

NiiLartey's work is grounded in Neoillusion, a comprehensive philosophical framework he has developed over four decades. Drawing on the ancient philosohpies of East and West, including Confucionism, NeoConfucionsism, Zen Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Vedanta, Taoism, Sufism, the Akbarian tradition of Ibn Arabi (particularly the doctrine of wahdat al-wujud, the unity of being), the Ishārāt tradition of Aḥmad al-Ghazālī', the Illuminationism tradition of Shihab al-Din Yahya ibn Habash Suhrawardi, phenomenology, contemporary art theory, and contemplative practice, Neoillusion proposes that reality is structured as a triarchic process: the Unmanifest (pure potentiality), Consciousness (the mediating principle), and the Manifest (actualized reality).

Through this lens, art is not decoration or self-expression but transmission, a vehicle through which consciousness recognizes itself across time, culture, and substrate. The artist's task is to empty the vessel of personal preference and become a clear medium through which the Real can disclose itself. This philosophy has been articulated in major works including The Return of the Neoillusionist Sage, The Templeality of a Neoillusionist Embodiment, The Mathematics of Consciousness: A Neoillusionist-Akbarian Response to Alexaner Ngu's Theory of Universal Unity, The Gatekeepers, The Borrowed Visage - Raphael, the Provincial Sublime, and the Manufacture of a Universal Face, alongside ongoing development of the Neoillusionist Memorandum and Samvega Magazine.

DISCIPLINES

VISUAL ART

Painting, sculpture, calligraphy, charcoal drawing, and digital art form the foundational disciplines of NiiLartey's visual practice. Works function as phenomenological events, ruptures in ordinary perception through which the Real becomes visible. His engagement with digital and AI-generated art extends Neoillusionist inquiry into emerging substrates, treating new technologies as further vessels through which consciousness may disclose itself.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Series including Fiber Optic Delphic Trance, The City Still Lifes, and Going Dark exemplify the Neoillusionist aim of capturing the meaning behind the veil. Through photographic practice, NiiLartey arrests the moment when ordinary reality becomes transparent to its sacred underpinning.

FILM

As director, producer, and cinematographer, NiiLartey has created cinematic works including One Day Out of Life, which has generated scholarly analysis across quantum field theory, Sufi metaphysics, and phenomenology. Film functions as another medium for Neoillusionist transmission, where moving image becomes meditation.

MUSIC LITHOGRAPHS

As composer, producer, and lyricist, NiiLartey has established Music Lithographs as a revolutionary new art category, the artistic execution of his musical pieces positioned at the intersection of sonic composition and visual edition. Each title exists in eight musical interpretations, limited editions that bring the lithograph tradition into the sonic realm.

PHILOSOPHY & PUBLICATION

A substantial corpus of treatises, essays, manifestos, and books that articulate Neoillusionist thought, engaging Eastern and Western philosophy, Islamic mysticism, contemporary art criticism, and political economy.

PERFORMANCE

Encompassing performance art, theater, dance, and choreography, NiiLartey's performance practice includes long-form prophetic projects such as Democracy Unravelling (2019, ongoing). These ritualistic acts make consciousness visible, engaging history, politics, and the sacred through embodied time-based work.

NEODANDI

Wearable philosophy that bridges art and daily life, extending the Neoillusionist vision into fashion as a discipline of presence. The Neodandi figure represents the practitioner who carries Neoillusionist awareness into every gesture of contemporary life.
